Group challenges politicians to make stand clear on railways

Shillong, Sep 15: Ka Sur U Paidbah Ka Bri Hynñiewtrep has come out against political parties who are in favour of bringing a goods train service into Khasi-Jaiñtia Hills.
While regional parties are opposed to passenger rail, fearing a large influx of immigrants, some are more amenable to goods trains, but Ka Sur U Paidbah is against both.
The group’s leader, Thomas Passah, called on all legislators to come forward and make their stand clear on the issue and not remain on the fence by staying silent.
A suggestion that the freight trains be allowed up to Khanapara, in Ri-Bhoi, does not wash with Passah.
“Khanapara is already a disputed area between Meghalaya and Assam and one cannot say the trains should be allowed till there as it will make things complicated,” he said, adding that if the central governments wants to introduce railways to the state then it should first give Meghalaya the Inner Line Permit.
