No formal agreement on sharing cabinet berth: Samlin

Shillong, Sep 15: There was no formal agreement that the two Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) MLAs would share a cabinet berth in the Meghalaya government, Public Health Engineering Minister Samlin Malngiang said today, just one day after his party colleague Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar said he was ready to take over from Malngiang for the remaining two and a half years of the government’s term.
The minister, however, did admit that the two had discussed the issue when the government was formed in 2018. The HSPDP is part of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance coalition government and was allotted one ministerial post.
“He (Tongkhar) had only requested me that the ministerial berth should be shared among us equally during the term. But it was only a verbal discussion between us,” Malngiang said.
He added that he is quite prepared to abide by the party’s decision on the matter.
“However, my only condition is that I should not be asked to step down immediately,” the PHE Minister said, because he wishes to complete certain unfinished tasks before handing over the reins, which could take at least four more months.
