HP NEWS SERVICE
Nongpoh, Sep 15: Members of the Legislative Assembly inspected a non-functioning fish market at Saiden village, Ri-Bhoi and held a review meeting on the empowerment of women in Nongpoh today.
The MLAs on the inspection included Ampareen Lyngdoh, Himalaya Shangpliang, Miani D Shira and Mayralborn Syiem.
The fish market is supposed to be of a modern, hygienic design but is still not functioning. The MLAs questioned the Director of Fisheries, AL Mawlong, on why the market was lying unused and urged the department to get it going soon in order to help local fish farmers.
Later, the MLAs held a review meeting in the conference hall of the Deputy Commissioner’s office to discuss women’s issues, particularly crimes against women.
Since April there have been 17 cases of crimes against women registered with the Ri-Bhoi police, mainly cases of sexual harassment. Most of these crimes have not seen a perpetrator arrested by police.
