Shillong, Sep 14: Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) MLA for Mawkyrwat, Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar, today said that is ready to take over as a minister in the Meghalaya government as per an agreement struck when the coalition was formed after the last state elections in 2018.
The HSPDP has two MLAs in the current Assembly – Tongkhar and Sohiong MLA Samlin Malngiang. Malngiang holds the Public Health Engineering portfolio, among others, in the coalition government.
It was agreed when the government formed, Tongkhar said, that the two MLAs would share the post of minister, each serving for two and a half years. The MDA government recently celebrated reaching halfway through its five-year term.
“Samlin has also said the same that such an arrangement exists. It’s just a matter of time. Even the party President (KP Pangniang) has said that there is an arrangement,” Tongkhar said.
The exchange of roles will in no way affect Tongkhar’s relationship with Malngiang or between the latter and the party, the Mawkyrwat MLA said.
“As friends we respect each other and I expect that being in the minister’s post will in no way affect our relationship. We will maintain our relationship as we have an understanding like we did in the last two and a half years,” Tongkhar said.
He also said that the prerogative on when the reshuffle will take place will depend on Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma and the other coalition parties will have to be consulted as well.
