Assam intrudes into West Khasi Hills to conduct road repairs

HP NEWS SERVICE
Shillong, Aug 30: A road repair team sent in by the Assam government allegedly encroached up to 600 metres inside Meghalaya territory between Salpara and Umsaitwait near Athiabari in West Khasi Hills today.
The team reportedly had members of the Assam Police to protect them as they repaired the road, Trelling Shira, President of the FKJGP Aradonga Unit said.
The road repair work started today morning around 8 am.
The road from Boko, Assam to the Meghalaya border has been built under a North Eastern Council scheme but the workers from the neighbouring state brazenly crossed into Meghalaya just three days before a scheduled meeting between the Deputy Commissioner of West Khasi Hills and his counterpart in Assam’s Kamrup district.
Shira also alleged that Assam police assaulted villagers of Athabari who passed through Hamin village in rural Kamrup District.
The FKJGP Unit condemned the action of the Assam government, which “has the habit of encroaching from time to time, especially on Sundays” and the Meghalaya government, which “failed to take action”. It also demanded that Meghalaya defend the people living in the border areas from encroachment.
