Shillong, Aug 26: Five police personnel, including a Sub-Inspector, belonging to Meghalaya Police’s Special Force 10 (SF-10) were injured after being attacked by unidentified miscreants with petrol bombs and stones near Mawlyndep village in the early hours of today.
“The police team had stones and petrol bombs hurled at them at Mawlyndep,” Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui said. “Investigation is on and the East Khasi Hills and Ri-Bhoi police teams are working together to trace the perpetrators. Further investigations will reveal who the people responsible for this attack and they will not escape.”
The police were accompanying trucks who were transporting vegetables from Lawmei’s vegetable collection centre, in East Khasi Hills, and the convoy then came under attack near Mawlyndep, which falls within Ri-Bhoi.
East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Sylvester Nongtnger said that the Farmers Association of Lawmei and those who oppose the use of Assam vehicles to transport vegetables from Lawmei had a meeting with the Block Development Officer (BDO) of Sohiong yesterday.
Fearing insecurity, the BDO requested police protection for the vegetable trucks and an SF-10 team were accordingly dispatched.
“One armed branch Sub-Inspector of SF-10, three SF-10 personnel and a driver constable were sent for patrolling to Lawmei. On their return from Lawmei along with the vegetable trucks, stones were pelted and petrol bombs hurled at the police vehicle (ML02 0198) … whereby the SF-10 personnel sustained burn injuries,” the SP said.
The injured police personnel were immediately rushed to Shillong Civil Hospital.
Three were given first aid and subsequently released, while the two others were admitted. Their condition is reportedly stable. The police vehicle was partially gutted in the attack.
Police from Umiam Police Station also rushed to the area and Special Operation Teams (SOTs) were dispatched to comb the area for the perpetrators.
One unused petrol bomb and other detritus were found at the scene of the attack.
An FIR has been lodged at Lumdiengjri Police Station and a case registered at Umiam Police Station.
