Meghalaya sees highest single-day spike in Covid cases

Shillong, Aug 20: Meghalaya witnessed its highest single-day spike in Covid-19 cases with 126 people testing positive on Thursday.
East Khasi Hills accounted for the vast majority of these cases, with 106 reported in the district. There were only five recoveries today, taking the number of active cases to 925 in Meghalaya.
Personnel belonging to the army and Assam Rifles (41), Border Security Force (16) and Central Reserve Police Force (three) made up 60 of the 106 cases in East Khasi Hills, but the continued increase in the number discovered through random testing in different parts of the state capital is increasingly worrying to officials.
Health Minister AL Hek said that 11 people were found to be positive after random sampling using the rapid antigen test in Khlieh Ïew, 10 in Motphran, 13 in Anjalee and five in Khyndailad.
One doctor and four nurses at Ganesh Das Hospital, an outpatient at RP Chest Hospital and a central government health worker from the hotspot of Rilbong also tested positive for the coronavirus.
Ten BSF personnel and two randomly-tested individuals in Tikrikilla made up the 12 fresh cases reported from West Garo Hills today, while Ri-Bhoi reported six new cases – five returnees and one found positive during contact tracing. A returnee in East Garo Hills and one maternal and child healthcare worker at a corona care centre in Jowai were also found to have Covid-19.
East Khasi Hills now has 571 active cases (BSF 108, armed forces 117 and civilians 356). The breakdown for the other districts is West Garo Hills 219, Ri-Bhoi 101, North Garo Hills 10, East Jaiñtia Hills eight, West Jaiñtia Hills five, South West Garo Hills four, South Garo Hills two, South West Khasi Hills one and East Garo Hills one.
Hek also informed that the total number of samples sent for testing until Thursday afternoon is 45,151, out of which 43,020 tested negative and the results of 470 are awaited.
The total number of citizens who have returned to the state till date are 29,471.
At the time of Hek’s briefing West Khasi Hills still reported only three cases, but later it was revealed that 14 new cases in Shallang and two in Riangdo were detected, taking the district’s tally to 19.
