Police, Wildlife on the hunt for poachers

HP NEWS SERVICE
Tura, Aug 1: A team of policemen led by the DFO of Wildlife are on the lookout for two gun wielding villagers in Sakalgre, a place that falls under the Nokrek Biosphere after they allegedly shot a deer for its meat.
The incident, which appeared to have taken place a few days ago, has created anger against the deer killers, who it is speculated got the country made guns from some residents of the town of Tura in West Garo Hills.
Photos of the two poachers with gun went viral on social media after the same was posted for the first time leading to many calls being made to the Wildlife and police departments for action.
Till filing of this report, the team was near the village of the incident with the two deer killers likely to be arrested and the weapons and evidence of the killing collected.
Social media this morning was rife with anger over the killing with many asking for the two villagers, apparently brothers, to be arrested and given the harshest punishment possible.
While the incident took place in the village of Sakalgre, the two miscreants allegedly belong to the nearby village of Baladinggre as per local sources.
“We have been informed on the development by the DFO, Arphiyush Sangma, and have dispatched a team to the place to nab the culprits. There will also be an investigation into how and where they got those rifles from,” said superintendent of police, WGH, Dr MGR Kumar.
The deer, which was shot down, is locally known as ‘matchok’.
“This is extremely wrong and the people responsible must be given the harshest punishment under law. How can they destroy wildlife in this way just for a few kgs of meat,” said a Tura resident, Silning D Sangma.
