MeECL to install smart meters

Shillong, Jan 13: Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma on Monday said that the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) has put in lot of efforts to ensure efficient system in place especially to reduce the aggregate technical and commercial (AT&C) losses.
He informed that installation of technology such as smart meters will help the MeECL have proper information and data of the consumers.
According to the Chief Minister there are 4.57 lakh consumers in the state including 1.03 lakh consumers in Shillong city alone.
“As a beginning, 1.8 lakh smart metres would be installed by the MeECL,”
He informed that for installing the initial 1.8 lakh smart meters the government will take loan from the ADB and for the remaining it will be done under Public-Private-Partnership mode.
The chief minister also urged consumers to use electricity efficiently while encouraging using of solar energy which the Central government has agreed to fund the state around Rs 18 crore for installing solar panels in 121 government institutions which include the state secretariats, official bungalows, PHCs and CHCs.
