Cabinet approves proposal to do away with domestic export fees

Shillong, Jan 13: The Meghalaya cabinet on Monday approved the proposal from Forest Department to do away with Export Fees (Domestic Export) on certain forest produce like broomstick, bay leaf, bamboo, firewood and minor minerals.
Informing media persons after the cabinet meeting here, deputy chief minister, Prestone Tynsong said that all these years the state government was collecting “domestic export fees on forest produce” at a rate of Rs 1000 per truck.
“This will help the people in generating revenue,” Tynsong said.
According to him, the state government decided to do away with the fees after petitions made by stakeholders to the Forest Department on this tax.
When asked how much revenue the state stands to lose after doing away with the tax, the deputy chief minister informed that in the financial year 2018-19 the state government collected Rs 6, 63, 53, 714.
