Shillong, Jan 13: The KSU South West Khasi Hills District has criticized the district administration for not keeping a check if the district task force and labour officers were functioning or not in the district to check influx.
KSU district president Forwardman Nongrem in a statement here on Monday pointed out that though the district task force was constituted as per the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act 2016 while the district level team as per the Work Permit Scheme for registration of labourers they have not initiated any measures to check influx.
Nongrem stated that under the Mawsynram, Mawkyrwat and Ranikor blocks labour officers were appointed and the infiltration directorate was set up. However, he stated, “It is sad that these officers are drawing their salaries without doing their work.”
While information was also sought under the RTI from the office of the Deputy Commissioner in South West Khasi Hills on registration of labourers from outside the state as per the scheme, Nongrem said that no report was made available by the district level team while the district task force is not functional.
“This shows that the district administration and the labour officers were not functioning and do not even conduct checks of work permits in the district,” Nongrem said. The KSU further urged the people’s representatives of the district to pursue with the demand for implementation of the inner line permit.
