Hingaria residents prevent construction of border road

HP NEWS SERVICE
Khliehriat, Nov 18: The people of Hingaria village under East Jaiñtia Hills district have stopped the National Border Construction Company (NBCC) from carrying out its work in constructing a border road in the area today.
The villagers had taken this step while alleging that they have not been paid compensation for the damage done to their land during border fencing work that was conducted in the area and that they have been waiting for almost a decade for their dues.
It may be noted here that work on this particular project has been stopped since November 15 and no headway has been made till date.
Initially, the 64 land owners had appealed to the Deputy Commissioner of East Jaiñtia Hills district, FM Dopth on the issue but were turned back as he had maintained that all compensation due to the landowners has been paid.
“Actually the government had assured that compensation will be paid for land acquired for the border fencing work and the road and also for the damage done to adjacent farmland. However, we have not received payment ill now,” the landowners said today.
