Demand for capital punishment for rape accused

HP NEWS SERVICE
Tura, Nov 7: Holding a rally in the village of Bhaitbari under Phulbari Police Station in West Garo Hills district, the All Meghalaya Minority Students Union (AMMSU) has sought capital punishment for a man accused in the rape of a seven year old minor.
On November 5, one Soffur Alom allegedly raped the minor when she went to the nearby paddy field to relieve herself due to a lack of a latrine in her house.
The incident took place towards the morning with the accused continually abusing the girl for over two hours. The savage act against the minor even led to her losing consciousness.
After regaining consciousness the minor then went home, but not before being threatened by Alom with a knife. He threatened her against revealing the act to anyone.
The girl however mustered the courage to narrate the details of what happened to her parents after which an FIR was filed against Alom, leading to his arrest yesterday by police.
The FIR further stated that Alom had been eyeing the minor for quite a while but as she was unaware of what the signs meant, she did not heed this.
AMMSU, along with residents of the Bhaitbari area today held a rally to condemn the sexual assault and also seek the harshest punishment for the culprit.
“This has come as a shock for all of us. What was done by Alom is utterly disgusting and condemnable. We demand that the authorities ensure the accused either rots in jail for his entire life or is hanged till death once his crime is proved. Our support is with the family of the victim and the seven year old,” said president of AMMSU, Nur Islam.
