Shillong, Sep 16: In a boost to the UDP, independent legislator from Baghmara constituency, Samuel M. Sangma, today joined the party as its associate member.
With his joining, the strength of the UDP has now increased to nine in the House of 60.
Samuel formally joined the UDP as its associate member at the residence of party president Dr. Donkupar Roy here in the presence of UDP leaders from Garo Hills.
Sangma is the second independent legislator to associate with the UDP this year.
On May 29, independent legislator from Mawphlang constituency, Syntar Klas Sunn had also joined the UDP as an associate member.
Meanwhile, with Sangma’s joining the UDP as associate member, the tally of the ruling MDA has now gone up to 40 in the 60-member Assembly.
Further, the latest entry by the Baghmara legislator into UDP camp has further consolidated the position of UDP and also given the party more bargaining power in the MDA government led by NPP.
UDP has three ministers in the MDA government and holds the key to the survival of the government.
Recently, the party had won the Ranikor Assembly by-election when its candidate Pius Marwein defeated five-time legislator and NPP candidate Martin M. Danggo.
